Some of the big choices to make when designing a custom home are the interior finishes. And flooring is one of the biggest of these choices. You will be looking at, walking on, and cleaning your floors for years to come. Floors will also be a big-ticket item, and they have a major impact on your overall design.

Here are some of the things that you will want to consider when choosing flooring.

Design

Floors are very obvious when you walk into a room. Design may be a major consideration for you. Do you want something that’s very trendy and in fashion, like linoleum or cork? Do you want something that is reminiscent of a specific style, like stone or terrazzo? Or perhaps eco-friendliness and renewability is what’s foremost in your mind (think bamboo.)

Ease for Cleaning

For some people how easy it is to clean the floor and how impermeable the floor is to dirt and stains may figure prominently in your choice. Tile floors are very tough, but they usually need the grout cleaned regularly. Wood floors are beautiful and quiet, but they are not as tough as linoleum or vinyl or tile.

Carpet used to be pretty unpopular for keeping a room ultra clean. There are new nylon fibers, however, that make carpeting much easier to keep clean than before.

Sound

Some floors are quieter and softer to walk on, and that may be a consideration for you. Perhaps you want a quieter and softer flooring on an upper floor. Or maybe you want something quiet for a children’s playroom, in which case, rubber floors are a new trend.

There is an enormous choice of flooring available, and it’s also possible to do custom inlay with many types of flooring including tile, wood, carpet, and linoleum.
