At Best Builders, our process is integral to the experience we deliver. It’s a key reason why we’re able to deliver exceptional results – every time.

Whether we’re building you a new custom home, renovating your house or condo, or creating an outdoor space for entertaining and recreation, the fundamentals of our process are the same: we assemble the perfect custom team for your project, preplan intensively, develop accurate schedules and budgets, and communicate with you continuously.

As a full-service homebuilder and renovator we are able to manage your project from the design, planning, and permitting stages through to the final inspection. You can download a step-by-step description of our process here, and get a sense of what it’s like to work with us below.

The Best Builders’ Process

We get to know you and your project
Our first step is to talk to you about your project and get a sense of your needs and budget. We want to discover your “why”. Why are you renovating – what is your focus? What’s most important to you in a new home? Are you looking to maximize your views, have more space for entertaining, display your collections and artwork, or create a family getaway? If you have photos, or examples of projects you like, we’d love to see them!
We make a site visit, so that we can see where the opportunities and challenges lie. What’s possible for your structure, if we’re doing a reno, and what’s possible for your site, if we’re building you a custom home?
We match you with the right design team, or work with yours
If you’re building a new custom home, one of our first tasks is to match you with an architect and designer who will listen just as carefully to your needs as we do, and then take your vision to the next level. (If you have your own architect and designer, we are happy to collaborate with them as well.)

Our goal is to create a team that’s a fit for your ideas and personality, who will work together to bring forward the best ideas and solutions for your space. It’s why we don’t offer an in-house design/build team; we think that every project deserves a fresh solution, and we achieve that by collaborating with a range of creative talent across the Lower Mainland.

If you’re renovating, it isn’t always necessary to have an architect, but you will need a designer and we can match you with one who reflects your style. (We are also happy to collaborate with the designer and design package you bring to the project; packages should include architectural and structural drawings, interior designs, finishing schedule and approved permits.)

At every key meeting, your Best Builder project manager will be by your side listening, protecting your interests, and noting the decisions that are made.
We only take on four or five clients at a time, so that everyone from your site supervisor, to your project manager, to our company owners can focus on your project at every stage. From the moment your Best Builders team is formed, we treat you like family – we’ve been told that the personal attention we pay to our clients is what elevates our work from a project to an experience.

We focus on the features that make your project uniquely “you”
Early in the process, we develop a floor plan, designing your project from the inside out, so that the focus is on your lifestyle and the flow, functionality, and features that will elevate it. This focus on designing a home or renovation that’s customized to your lifestyle helps us to create a project that is uniquely “you”. Creating an ideal version of your custom home or renovation also helps us to set an achievable budget and design goals, and prioritize what’s truly important.
A detailed scope of work helps us to stay on budget and on schedule

When it comes to your budget and schedule, we try to anticipate any challenges and preplan down to the finishing details so that we can protect you from any unpleasant surprises throughout the process. Budgets can be met or blown with finishes, and by preparing a detailed scope of work and agreeing to every item before we begin construction, we can give you an accurate project budget and timeline.

Our team creates all of the necessary documentation for your project: architectural, structural and design drawings, permitting packages, and a schedule detailing all of your finishings, and mechanical and electrical specifications. We also give you a comprehensive budget, schedule, and project management outline.

We make sure that you always know where your project is at
One of our goals is to make sure that you are always up-to-date and informed. We explain our process at every stage, and we make frequent site visits and host weekly site meetings that our clients are welcome to attend.

You can track the costs and progress of your project at any time, from any location, through our Buildertrend software. Our building crew use the cloud-based system to regularly update their progress, send change orders, and share photos.

We have your back and your budget
We make managing project finances easy for you by offering a single point of billing for everyone on your team – from your engineers and consultants, to the subtrades involved in your project. Our longstanding relationships with trusted suppliers mean that we can often obtain more value when making purchases, and we pass those savings on to you. Every invoice is checked and re-checked by our front office team before we submit it for payment, so that you can have confidence that the work you’re paying for is done. Transparency and integrity aren’t just words to us, they’re the basis of every relationship we build, and we are always available to explain your billing.

When it comes to the project itself, we’re committed to you and to protecting your best interests. If challenges arise, whether it’s with City Hall, or an unforeseen issue at the site, we’re beside you every step of the way, helping to solve the issue.

You and your neighbours will love our crew
Our crew has a reputation, not just for being friendly and knowledgeable, but for maintaining safe, well-organized, and clean worksites at all times – in fact, some of our best referrals have come from neighbours who lived beside our ongoing projects for months! Our team is Red Seal-certified, so they’re skilled at their trades, and many of them have been with us for more than a decade.
We don’t just build homes, we build relationships
Relationship-building isn’t part of every homebuilder’s process, but it’s an important part of ours. During the project you become part of our family, and once your project is finished that relationship doesn’t end – we still talk to clients whose projects we worked on 15 years ago!

If we build you a new custom home, we’ll be in touch one year after you move in for a deficiency check-in, just to make sure that everything in your new home is still working well for you. And we encourage you to stay in touch – we’re proud of the work we do, and like the friendships we form, we’re confident it will stand the test of time.
