When you are planning the construction of a new home or renovating an older home, there are lots of interesting things that you can do with walls that are unusual, offbeat, and/or cutting edge. Here are few ideas for you to think about.

Plant Wall

Something that we see occasionally in a commercial setting is a plant wall. But there is no reason why you couldn’t do this at home. There is specific equipment that you can buy for a plant wall that would cover the wall and make watering easy.

However, even without special plant-wall hardware, you can still have just floor -to-ceiling shelves for this. Ample lighting will be a must with big windows, skylights, and/or artificial lighting suspended from the ceiling. If you plan for this before building your home, some storage, a sink and a drain in the floor nearby will make your life easier.

Floor drains are also useful if you have an indoor pool or hot tub or where you intend to keep a lot of indoor plants or aquariums.

Vinyl Wall Covering

There are several vinyl wall products available that are commonly used in commercial settings. These products have heat-welded seams that prevent dirt and mildew from collecting in corners. Some of these products can even function like a whiteboard.

It would be great fun to put a white board wall in a child’s room, playroom, or home-schooling environment. And vinyl wall coverings would work great in a home gym or family bathroom because they are very durable and easy to clean.

Water Feature

Yes, it’s entirely possible to devote a wall to a water feature. Think of this before you build so that you can have the appropriate plumbing features ready to go.

Mural

An artist can paint a custom mural for you on any wall or ceiling. If you get tired of it, you can always paint over it later. You could also have a custom tile mosaic mural that will be grouted. This would be more complicated to remove, though, if you want a change. A custom tile mosaic could be a backsplash in a kitchen or bathroom, too.
