Designing a new home can be a lot of fun and it can also be stressful. What should you have for finishes? Here are some our design tips for those planning for new home construction or a large renovation.

Trim

Trim can be anything from medium-density fibreboard (MDF,) to wood or tile. What you choose will depend on your style choices and your budget. Door and window trim can be very narrow to very wide and simple to ornate. There is no limit to what can be implemented if you have the imagination to envision it.

Counters

Everyone loves solid surface counters like granite or quartz, but laminate still has its place. There are also novel counter ideas like glass. It’s possible to use tiny glass tiles for a counter–as long as it’s for a low-traffic bathroom. There is tempered glass and laminated glass, although it might not be right for everyone. And there are also glass counters made of glass pieces suspended in a resin.

There are stone counters that are possible beyond the usual marble and granite. There is soapstone, example. All of the different stones have pros and cons, so discuss this with your contractor if you want something offbeat.

Floors

Floors can be as uncomplicated or complicated as your taste and budget will allow. It’s possible to do inlays and complex designs with carpet and with wood flooring as well as tile. Terrazzo floors were big in the 1950’s and 60’s, and they’re coming back. People also use flooring materials on walls and vice versa.

Backsplashes

Backsplashes can have custom, mosaic pictures hand-designed by artists. Furthermore, backsplashes can be done with a variety of materials beyond ceramic tile including metal and glass.

The one thing you may want to keep in mind is to have similar or related finishes and/or colours as you go from room to room. With complementary finishes, you will end up with a cohesive end product. If you are unsure of design choices, talk to your contractor, who will have a wealth of experience, and you can also talk to a design professional even for just an hour or two of consultation.
